Visitors of all ages will enjoy experiencing this extraordinarily alive place. The house with its garden was a hub of African American culture in its day, and today visitors can step into another era to imagine the lives of the family and their famous guests. The beautiful home remains almost exactly as Anne Spencer left it when she died in 1975, the individuality and artistry of the Spencers radiating from the home’s original furnishings and decor. Phone numbers are scribbled on the wall of the telephone booth in the front hall, materials collected by Edward Spencer on his postal route are craftily repurposed into the home, and one of Anne Spencer’s poems is painted directly onto a kitchen cabinet. It is a home that was undeniably the Spencers’, layered with histories touched and shaped by many remarkable individuals. Follow these fascinating stories in this jewel in the crown of the Pierce Street neighborhood in Lynchburg, Virginia.
*The house and museum will be closed November 1, 2023 through May 1, 2024 unless by special appointment*
